"I simply can't build my hopes on a foundation of confusion, misery and death... I think peace and tranquility will return again", wrote Anne Frank in her diary.

Anne had every good reason to feel this way during World War Two. I was fortunate to be born in peace time, or at least in the calm in the aftermath. As kids, my friends and I enjoyed bags of freedom with great music as our soundtrack. I was always glad I didn't have to go off and fight as my Dad and Grandad had. Time has moved on and I find my rose-coloured spectacles seriously clouding over. Pessimism can come easy these days, surrounded as we are by depressing news of military aggression and violence, living proof of the old adage that those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Out of my dismay came this tune for 2023, 'Song of Experience', a timely and gentle reminder to build foundations for lasting peace.
